Say hello to Emily!

Emily Frances Black makes music to close your eyes to— cinematic indie folk with a lyrical voice reminiscent of Laura Marling and Adrianne Lenker. Her sound is the culmination of her upbringing in the New England folk scene, Deadhead dad, and grunge-tinged adolescence.

Born in Cambridge, MA, she moved to the Rocky Mountains when she was eighteen to attend a Buddhist university where she now teaches. Further back, her ancestors hail from Rathlin Island— sharing the same ancestral home and surname as Ireland's renowned folk music dynasty, The Black Family. Guided by lineage and community care, she is determined to learn the Irish fiddle, donates a portion of all proceeds to Girls Rock Denver, and still performs on the Washburn guitar thrifted by family friend and Canadian folk legend Garnet Rogers when she was thirteen.

A lifelong visual artist, she approaches songwriting with a painter’s eye, exploring themes of love, female individuation, and the wisdom of the wild. A once-shy performer, Black wrote songs in private for over twenty years before the upcoming 2026 debut release of her EP, Humming Down the Hallway.
